When VelmaMindy Kaling’s new HBO Max Scooby-Doo spin-off—was first introduced, making the brains of the Scooby Gang the primary character seemed like an intriguing concept. Alas, the brand new trailer for the grownup animated collection reveals a comedy take that feels decidedly retro… as in outdated.

Velma was not too long ago featured in her queer glory in an unrelated-to-this-series Scooby Doo animated movie, which was refreshing and pure pleasure for the character. We had been hoping for extra of that with out her questioning her sexuality by means of crushes on her pals as a part of the comedy—which appears to be like to be a step again on this upcoming collection.

Truly, it feels just like the present’s power is a decade too late, with the mean-girlification of Velma Dinkley (voiced by Kaling) and everybody having crushes on one another being the punchlines whereas she assembles Mystery Inc. You virtually overlook they’re about to look into a faculty homicide. It’s so oddly off-putting how imply the highschool variations of the gang are to one another—it feels very late aughts comedy versus Kaling’s extra fashionable and relatable highschool crew on her hilarious stay motion collection Never Have I Ever. We’ll wait to see extra and hope to be confirmed incorrect, as a result of the voice solid that’s been assembled for the collection is high notch: Sam Richardson (Hocus Pocus 2) is the long run Shaggy, Constance Wu (Hustlers) is Daphne, and Glen Howerton (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) fills out the core group as Fred.

Here’s the HBO Max synopsis: “Velma is an adult animated comedy series telling the origin story of Velma Dinkley, the unsung and under-appreciated brains of the Scooby-Doo Mystery Inc. gang. This original and humorous spin unmasks the complex and colorful past of one of America’s most beloved mystery solvers.”

Velma streams on HBO Max January 12.
