As the design director for six mainline Star Wars movies in addition to The Mandalorian, Lucasfilm vice president and executive creative director Doug Chiang has spent numerous time determining what stuff seems to be like within the galaxy far, far-off. But mapping out the interiors of the Halycon—the “luxury starship” that serves because the setting for the Galactic Starcruiser, Disney World’s new two-day immersive resort expertise—gave him an unprecedented activity: determining the place Han Solo pooped whereas on his honeymoon.

“It’s a funny thing, because that’s kind of an ongoing joke with all of us [at Lucasfilm]: where are the toilets? You never see any,” Chiang informed me after I talked with him throughout the media junket that adopted my two-day keep onboard the Halcyon. As he famous, we did see a “refresher” onboard the Razor Crest in The Mandalorian, however that vessel’s barely glimpsed, utilitarian “vac tube” doesn’t fairly mesh with the concept of a keep onboard a luxurious starship. “Obviously on the Starcruiser we have to have toilets,” Chiang stated. “So what should it look like?”

It seems: Nothing particular. A bathroom is a rest room, and apparently even in far-flung galaxies, individuals wish to sit down on white porcelain to do their enterprise (by no means thoughts that Western-style bathrooms are hardly omnipresent even right here on Earth). But the design course of for that a part of the ship does illustrate the problem Chiang and his collaborators at Walt Disney Imagineering [WDI] confronted when establishing a totally immersive science-fictional setting: how are you able to make the place appear to be Star Wars whereas additionally guaranteeing it features like an actual resort?

“Sets for films are very temporary; they’re cheated,” Chiang stated. “We can add visual effects after the fact. When we were doing Galaxy’s Edge [at Disney’s Hollywood Studios], we brought that up to the next level, because it was unguided. A lot of the environments there had to be ‘real,’ in the sense [they were] safe for people to interact with them. The Galactic Starcruiser brought that to a whole new level, because now it’s a two-day experience instead of several hours.”

Given the expertise Disney is pitching to potential clients (and charging as much as $1,200 an evening for), the phantasm needed to transcend even what Chiang designed for the movies he’s labored on, together with The Phantom Menace, Rogue One, and The Rise of Skywalker.

“The whole design process was identical to the films, in that we had to make sure it looks like Star Wars, [and follows] all the visual languages that we have in terms of form and aesthetics,” Chiang stated. “The real difference was how to bring that up to a fabrication level that is unparalleled, because you don’t know what people are going to try to hold and move. All the care and thought had to be put in there so if, let’s say, [a guest] goes behind a door they weren’t supposed to go in—[it has to be] in story, so it still holds up. You have to figure out, what does the back side of that door look like? All the buttons have to work, because obviously they can’t just be arbitrary decorations.”

Striving to hit such lofty, maybe unprecedented design targets meant Chiang obtained deeply concerned in your complete course of, from preliminary designs to ultimate buildout, a course of that included group opinions between Lucasfilm and WDI to debate the deserves of a specific carpet pattern, swatch of material, or hue of paint colour. As a visitor, I’d say the staff succeeded for essentially the most half—by far the perfect a part of the Galactic Starcruiser expertise is just inhabiting the ship for just a few days, and having the prospect to really wander round a small slice of the flicks you grew up loving.

My favourite spot onboard was the bar/lounge, the place you possibly can order an elaborate, in-universe blended drink (I’d advocate the Mustafarian model of a margarita, if it hadn’t given me a full day of heartburn) and play a spherical of sabacc at a “holographic” card desk (sorry, no 3D holochess… not but, anyway). Much like Oga’s Cantina at Galaxy’s Edge, the intergalactic watering gap actually fells prefer it fell out of the flicks, even with half the patrons in t-shirts and flip-flops.

For his half, Chiang was most impressed with the Atrium—the Halcyon’s closest equal to a resort foyer. It’s the place friends will collect to see key parts of the narrative play out, a lot of them happening on the excessive walkways that border the room (the presence of ample railings the most important tipoff you aren’t really in a Star Wars film). The partitions are adorned with with giant “holographic” shows and “windows” that provide you with a view of house. Walking into the Atrium from the “shuttle” (really an elevator) that brings you to the resort is an actual Wizard of Oz second: you actually really feel you’ve stepped into one other galaxy. For Chiang, the expertise was notably gratifying.

“The scale of that was [enormous],” he stated. “Like one of our large movie sets, but it had to be absolutely real, and had to physically work for the guests and serve all the functions it needed to. The initial design was pretty ambitious, and to have it actually be realized at this kind of a level was very impressive for me. This morning when I first came on and saw everything together with scenic lighting, it felt like I was walking into a real Star Wars environment. Not just a movie set.”
