Defense Department Announces Plans for a Secure Internet in Space

The Department of Defense (DOD) has signed agreements with 4 corporations to assist develop a space-based communications community of industrial and army satellites. The undertaking hopes to make use of army and industrial satellites to move information throughout a safe communication structure, finally delivering it to army customers.

DOD’s Defense Innovation Unit awarded contracts to Amazon Web Services, Kuiper Government Solutions, Microsoft Azure Space, and SpiderOak Mission Systems for its Hybrid Space Architecture (HSA) undertaking, the group announced on Wednesday.

The undertaking was introduced earlier in July, with preliminary contracts awarded to Aalyria, Anduril, Atlas, and Enveil. Now, the Department of Defense is seemingly diversifying its portfolio of corporations, working outdoors its common community of business companions. “New commercial space systems provide the digital and hardware information systems infrastructure to improve speed, latency, scalability, and interoperability,” DIU wrote in an announcement.

For the hybrid community, industrial satellites will talk with each other throughout Low Earth Orbit, Medium Earth Orbit, Geostationary Orbit, and cislunar house to maneuver bigger volumes of information at the next pace. “A fully networked battlespace has been the dream of commanders for decades, but is now finally within reach,” DIU wrote in its statement.
