Apple Stores and licensed service suppliers will not restore iPhones which were reported as lacking by the GSMA device registry, in accordance with an inside memo obtained by MacRumors. The firm now requires restore technicians to disclaim customers a restore in the event that they’re notified of its lacking standing within the MobileGenius or GSX programs they use to service prospects.

The GSMA machine registry is a database of machine serial numbers with details about every machine’s standing. For instance, if somebody studies their telephone as stolen to legislation enforcement, the authorities could flag the machine by GSMA, which may also help restore suppliers determine a tool as lacking if it ever comes into their store.

Apple’s new coverage is designed to stop its restore suppliers from fixing telephones which will have fallen into the incorrect fingers. It builds on its existing rules that bar technicians from eradicating a tool’s Activation Lock until the shopper can present proof that they bought it. Apple will even refuse to carry out a restore if customers put their machine in Lost Mode by the Find My app, which locks the machine and shows contact data on the lock display.

The firm nonetheless hasn’t publicly confirmed MacRumors’ findings. The Verge reached out to Apple with a request for remark however didn’t instantly hear again.
