As well-known as he’s, George R.R. Martin will not be above Googling himself. At least that’s the one wise clarification for the way he “stumbled on” a video clip from a 1991 interview with him wherein the soon-to-be-acclaimed fantasy writer was requested about his ideas on… science fiction.
The interview was with the University of Calgary’s campus TV station NUTV, which dug the clip out of its personal archives and bestowed it upon YouTube again in 2017, just for George to share it on his blog (by way of Winter Is Coming) final week:
Martin’s perception that sci-fi has an unjustified rap for being predictive of the longer term is an astute commentary that’s completely appropriate—authors can strive, however they’re all the time going to be myopic about what the longer term holds. As Martin says, they could get one thing proper, however they get far, much more mistaken. And that’s superb, as a result of they’re not writing for audiences sooner or later, however for these within the current.
If you’re confused why the unseen interviewer requested Martin about sci-fi, it’s as a result of he wasn’t identified for his fantasy work in 1991, however as an alternative his science fiction and horror work like Nightflyers, Sandkings, the Wild Cards superhero anthology, and “The Thousands Worlds” tales. If you’re confused about his hair, properly, so is Martin. “I don’t remember that hair. My hair was dark brown when I was young,” Martin wrote. “When I got older, it went to gray and then white. Judging from this clip, I guess 1991 was when it changed, but I don’t ever recall it being half-and-half like that, or having a dark beard with white hair. But I guess I did.”
In 1991, Martin began work on A Game of Thrones, the primary e-book in his epic A Song of Ice and Fire sequence. After it was revealed in 1996, I assume only a few folks have requested GRRM about science fiction since.
