Japanese animator and director Makoto Shinkai had been a reputation within the animation house for many years due to works like She and Her Cat and Voices of a Distant Star. But it was 2016’s Your Name, and 2019’s Weathering With You, that turned worldwide viewers onto his filmography. His subsequent movie, below the title of Suzume no Tojimari (or roughly “Suzume Locking Up the Doors” in English), and it seems to be each bit as beautiful as his earlier two movies.

The movie stars a teenage woman named Suzume, whose bizarre life within the quiet city of Kyushu is abruptly upended when she comes throughout a single door standing upright in the midst of the ruins of an deserted scorching spring.
