New sea creatures simply dropped.
In early June, a group of marine scientists with the Schmidt Ocean Institute boarded a analysis vessel referred to as R/V Falkor and sailed out to the distant Phoenix Islands Archipelago within the west-central Pacific Ocean. For 34 days, they mapped out over 11,500 sq. miles (30,000 sq. kilometers) of the ocean ground with high-resolution underwater cameras, and likewise acquired video of 5 extra underwater mountains.
“The coverage of this expedition was remarkable—we found changes in species across depth and geography around the Pacific equator and in the suite of organisms living on corals,” stated Tim Shank, a biologist on the Woods HoIe Oceanographic Institution, in a press launch. “Looking into these deep-sea communities has altered the way we think about how organisms live and interact on seamounts and how they maintain diversity of life in the deep ocean.”
Some of the animals they captured on digital camera had by no means earlier than been documented by researchers, like a uncommon whale shark and an octopus that appears prefer it’s manufactured from glass. The researchers arrived safely again ashore on Thursday, able to share these discoveries. Here are some highlights.
